Orthoceras was an extinct genus of nautiloid cephalopod that lived from the Ordovician to the Triassic periods, approximately 500 to 200 million years ago. These marine animals had a long, straight, conical shell with internal chambers called septa, connected by a tube called a siphuncle, which they used for buoyancy and propulsion. Orthoceras fossils are found worldwide, particularly in limestone deposits, and are often polished to reveal their distinctive chambered structure.
